After PE and Cooldown
Establish class song or class chant.
Today We Are Learning
A compound word is two words put together to make one new word.
A syllable is a beat, or spoken part, in a word.
Today’s Four Words
Teacher reference: Write only the whole word on the board first. Let students find the two words before showing the breakdown below.
- doghouse = dog + house
- raincoat = rain + coat
- cupcake = cup + cake
- snowman = snow + man
Class Word Work
Use the class song or chant sheet to work through the four words. The teacher leads the word work. Students participate by listening, repeating, answering aloud, pointing, and drawing.
Clap each word and listen for its two syllables.
Work with doghouse first. Then use the same routine with raincoat, cupcake, and snowman.
Drawing Work
No student writing is required today. Students draw the two smaller words and the compound word. Use one or two pages for the drawing work.
- doghouse: draw a dog, a house, and a doghouse.
- raincoat: draw rain, a coat, and a raincoat.
- cupcake: draw a cup, a cake, and a cupcake.
- snowman: draw snow, a person or simple body shape, and a snowman.
As students draw, ask quick oral questions: “What two words are inside?” “What picture did you draw first?” “What new word did they make together?”
End-of-Lesson Game: Stump the Teacher!
Students think of a secret compound word. They do not tell the teacher.
Students draw the first thing, then draw the second thing. The teacher looks at the two drawings and tries to guess the compound word.

Today’s Big Idea
A whole word can come apart.
We can look inside it.
Then we can put it back together.
